Dear
People of God,
As general convention draws near, the Episcopal Church I suspect will be getting some media attention
primarily over the subject of human sexuality.
The Diocese of New Hampshire has elected an openly gay man for their Bishop. The election of every Bishop
in the Episcopal Church is subject to approval by the Standing Committees of each Diocese, a simple majority
being required. Elections that take place within 120 days of General Convention are voted on at General Convention.
The church has wrestled with questions surrounding persons who are gay and lesbian for the past 20 years or
more. Are they full members of the body of Christ, do they have a choice as to their sexuality? These and
many other questions are of concern to all of us as Christian human beings. There are people of faith who hold
very different opinions on this subject.
I believe most of you know where I stand and those who have read the most recent Cross-and Crosier know
where Bishop Herlong stands. I want to be clear about who is welcome at St. Mark’s and what is and is not
acceptable behavior. Everyone is welcome in this place of sanctuary. Everyone is encouraged to express their
feeling and their beliefs. We will honor every person’s opinion and no one will be told his or her opinion is not valid.
That said I would not accept the denigration of people for who they are or what they believe. I can tell you
people in this congregation who disagree with my position and I believe they will tell you that they know I love
them no less for our disagreement.
The Anglican tradition at its best, claims to be the via media, the middle of the road. I will add that and
further, meaning we embrace an anglo-catholic heritage, we embrace some of the reforms that protestants
brought to the church and we embrace much of the Roman Catholic expression of the faith. We celebrate a
great variety of positions on many theological matters Through it all we know ourselves to be one in the Body
of Christ and that we may trust that speaking the truth in love will d us into deeper knowledge and
understanding of God’s grace amongst us.
God's Peace,Battle +

Second
Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee
“Fighting
Hunger. Feeding Hope”
RECEIPT
July 14, 2003
St.
Mark’s Episcopal Church
P.O.
Box 741
Antioch,
Tennessee 37011
Dear
Friends,
Thank
you so much for your recent donation of $300.00 to Second Harvest. Your support
means that fewer men, women, and children will go to bed hungry tonight. On
behalf of the many clients served by Second Harvest, I thank you!
For
1 in 5 children in Middle Tennessee,
free meals received at school are often their only source of food. For the 3
months that school is out, these children experience greater hunger and often do
not know when their next meal will be.
Thankfully, your generous gift enables Second Harvest to increase our out
reach to children through Kids Cafe sites.
Kids Cafe is a feeding program for
our youngest in need — located in low-income neighborhoods, year round they
provide children with hot, nutritious meals in a safe environment.
Each
week throughout the year we serve evening meals to over 2,500 kids. During the
summer we add 30 additional breakfast
sites. Kids Cafe provides food and
hope to so many children who have learned the hardships of life at an early age.
Never doubt that you are making a profound difference in the lives of our
neighbors.
Thank
you again for your suppirt and for continuing to share in our vision. Together,
we will reduce hunger in Middle
Tennessee—one meal at a time.
Sincerely,
Jaynee K. Day President/CEO
This
acknowledges receipt of $300.00 as a charitable contribution made on 6/30/2003
for General Operating Support.
This
gift was posted on 7/11/2003 (Check #5902).
We have provided you with no goods or services in exchange for this
contribution. This means the tax-deductible amount of your contribution is
$300.00.

As many of you know I have collected recipes from our church family for several years to put into a
loose leaf binder as a wedding present to many of the young people of our congregation. Recipes
given in the past are saved on my computer. Now we have weddings coming up soon and since
there are many new people since I last asked...I am asking again for your favorite recipes. You can
send me one or a dozen, I don't mind.
I have a small mailstation machine and it may not receive long emails so may I suggest you email to
me one at a time. Or bring to me at church.
Plans are being formed to create a church cookbook to sell as a fundraiser and I will submit all the
recipes I have saved to
that project.
Thanks for your help!
